Selected Sampling
“As of December 2023, 48 percent of video gamers in the United States were female, with the remaining 52 percent of U.S. video gaming audiences were male” (Clement, 2024). The sample data might still have a disproportionate number of men due to historical and cultural influences, despite women making up 48% of the gaming population in 2024. “As of February 2022, only less than one in 10 among the leading streamers on the main live platforms was a woman. In comparison, approximately 90 percent of live streamers on Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming were men” (Ceci, 2024). Despite this near-equal gender distribution, the sampling data revealed a significant discrepancy. While women make up 48% of the gaming population, they constitute only 18% of console gamers, 15% of PC gamers, 6% of mobile gamers, and 9% of cross-platform gamers in the potential sample. These visualizations illustrate that the probability of a potential customer being a woman is lower compared to the proportion of women who play games. The probability of a potential customer being a female in our sample is significantly lower, with only 4% for console gamers, 3% for PC gamers, 1% for mobile gamers, and 2% for cross-platform gamers.
Several factors contribute to this discrepancy. Historically, gaming has been marketed more aggressively towards men, creating a perception that video games are predominantly a male pastime. Certain gaming platforms or genres, such as first-person shooters and sports games, tend to attract more male players, influencing the composition of the sample. Female gamers might participate less in promotional events or provide data at different rates than men, affecting the sample distribution. Social and cultural factors, such as stereotypes and lack of representation, can also discourage women from engaging more actively in gaming communities. These discrepancies highlight the need for more inclusive marketing strategies to ensure fair representation and accurate insights.
